Beaverton marks Classified Employees Week with a movie night

Over the years Beaverton Chapter 48 had seemingly tried everything it could to show members how much they’re appreciated during Classified Employees Week. This year the chapter decided to try something different — a movie night hosted by the Valley Theatre — that both members and their families could enjoy.

By all accounts the event was a resounding success with between 700 and 800 members and their families showing up to catch one of six movies — “Coco,” “Paddington 2,” “Ferdinand,” “Thor: Ragnarok,” “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and “The Shape of Water.”

“The best thing about this type of event is all the smiling faces and all the happy, relaxed classified employees that joined us,” Chapter President Anna Taylor said. “Our intention was to build community and engage as many members as possible. The members of the planning committee were over the moon by the number of RSVPs they received (955) and then by all the people who actually came.”

The planning committee consisted of Taylor, Zone I Director Dianna Hess, Chapter Vice President Charlene Compton, Secretary Diane Holste and Treasurer Kristen Croft.

“Getting this event together took a LOT of work, but was worth every second,” said Croft, who personally printed and cut out more than 1,000 tickets in addition to purchasing plates and napkins as well as helping with serving and cleaning up.

“It was so wonderful to see so many of our members and their families enjoying an evening out,” Croft added. “They deserve much more appreciation every single day than is given, and I’m so pleased that we were able to show them a fraction of that through this event.”

According to Hess, the committee has received the “most amazing positive feedback” and hopes to do another movie event next year. One of the things the group might do differently would be to hold it on a weekend.

“Our night folks — even though their families were invited — missed out on our evening event,” Hess said. “If we held it on a weekend, perhaps we’d be able to get even more folks in the door!”
