OSEA Members in Action: Knappa Chapter 52 Members Rally for a Fair Contract

Knappa Chapter 52 is currently in bargaining, fighting for fair wages and health insurance coverage for the 55 classified employees in Knappa School District. Right now, Knappa classified salaries are among the lowest on the north coast, with the average employee earning just over $23,000 a year. Because many are kept on part time schedules, most classified workers do not qualify for health insurance through the school district.

Knappa Chapter 52 held a rally to raise awareness in the community on Friday, Oct. 13, outside the high school football game. With fliers that read "This game brought to you in part by classified school employees," OSEA members informed parents and community members about who classified are, why they are essential to students' education and how district practices are creating high turnover.

"Classified are unsung heroes," said Chapter President Casey Vangundy. "We teach your kids, feed your kids, keep your kids safe and make sure they get to and from school safely. More importantly, we listen to your kids, are their for your kids and would do anything for your kids... Classified deserve your support and your respect!"

There's still time to show solidarity with Knappa classified! Join the chapter to pack the room for a school board meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m. Wear your OSEA T-shirt and meet behind the high school (41535 Old Highway 30 in Astoria) by the "buses only" sign!
