As educators, OSEA members know the value of education. That’s why our union awards over $20,000 in scholarships each year to help members and their families pursue their academic goals. Additional scholarships are available through our partners, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and Union Plus.
For High School Seniors
OSEA Guy Davis and Past Presidents’ Scholarships
These scholarships are available to current high school seniors attending an accredited college or university next fall. The Guy Davis Scholarship awards $1,250 to one student in each of OSEA’s seven zones. The Past Presidents’ Scholarship is a statewide award of $1,500. Both scholarships use the same application form. To be eligible, applicants must have a relative who is a member in good standing of OSEA or ROSE. Apply by March 1, 2023.
AFT Robert G. Porter Scholarships
AFT awards four-year scholarships of $8,000 to four high school seniors each year. Students must demonstrate an understanding of the role unions play in creating a more just society. Applicants must have a parent or legal guardian who has been an AFT or OSEA member in good standing for at least one year. Apply between Dec. 1, 2022, and March 31, 2023.
Union Plus Scholarship
Union Plus awards one-time scholarships of $500-$4,000 to union members or their dependents. Applicants must be accepted into an accredited school at the time the award is issued. Students must re-apply each year. Apply by Jan. 31, 2023.
For Current Undergraduates
OSEA John Brown Undergraduate Scholarship
The John Brown Undergraduate Scholarship awards $1,000 to a current college junior or senior each year. It is open to the children and grandchildren of OSEA members in good standing. Applicants must have a college cumulative GPA of 2.8. Apply by Jan. 15, 2023.
Union Plus Scholarship
Union Plus awards one-time scholarships of $500-$4,000 to union members or their dependents. Applicants must be accepted into an accredited school at the time the award is issued. Students must re-apply each year. Apply by Jan. 31, 2023.
For OSEA Members
OSEA Lou Gerber Scholarship
OSEA sponsors two $1,000 scholarships in each zone for OSEA members. Scholarships may be used at an accredited school to pursue a graduation equivalence degree (GED) or higher education. Applicants must be OSEA members in good standing. Apply by Jan. 15, 2023 (PDF).
OSEA Kathy Melzer Mini-Grants
These professional development grants can be used for inservice training, workshops or seminars. Grants of approximately $400 are awarded by lottery to three OSEA members in good standing in each zone. Funds must be used within one year and can cover tuition and required materials. Enter by November 5, 2023.
AFT Robert G. Porter Scholarships
AFT awards 10 scholarships of $1,000 each to members who seek to implement ideas about the role union members can play in reclaiming a more just society. Applicants must be an AFT or OSEA member in good standing for at least one year. Apply between Dec. 1, 2022, and March 31, 2023.
Union Plus Scholarship
Union Plus awards one-time scholarships of $500 to $4,000 to union members or their dependents. Applicants must be accepted into an accredited school at the time the award is issued. Students must re-apply each year. Apply by Jan. 31, 2023.
